Excursions
Bartrès: Bartrès is the village 2.5 miles (4 km) from Lourdes where Bernadette spent two periods of her life prior to the apparitions. Depending on the group we normally celebrate mass in the Parish church or at Hosanna House.
Pont d’Espagne: The Pont d’Espagne is situated at the start of the Valley of Marcadau (meaning the valley of the market) where formerly the peasants from both sides of the frontier would meet and trade. There is a ‘cable car’ to the plateau which you can explore on foot or otherwise take the chair lift up to the Lac de Gaube or just simply admire the scenery from the café at the Pont d’Espagne.
Gavarnie: Gavarnie is the village with the famous Cirque 10,000 ft high and the longest waterfall in Europe, the source of the River Gave which flows past the Grotto of Lourdes. You can either walk to the base of the waterfall or take a donkey ride or just stop at a café and admire the view.
St Bertrand de Comminges & Spain: The village of St Bertrand is sited on the top of a hill surrounded by high walls and dominates the surrounding countryside. It was the former seat of the Bishop of Comminges whose diocese extended well into spain. |
