Knock Shrine
Knock is a significant pilgrimage site due to the reported apparition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist in 1879.
Fifteen villagers, ranging from young children to elderly adults, witnessed a vision at the gable wall of the local parish church. They saw the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist praying together. Beside them, there was an altar with a lamb and a cross, symbolizing Jesus as the Lamb of God. The figures appeared luminous and life-sized but remained silent throughout the apparition, which lasted for about two hours despite the rain. This event, which had no verbal message, was considered a profound sign of divine presence.
The apparition was later investigated and recognized by the Catholic Church. Since then, Knock has become a major pilgrimage destination, especially for Catholics, attracting millions of visitors annually. The Shrine of Knock is a place of prayer, reflection, and healing, recognized by Pope John Paul II and other popes, who have visited and honoured the site.
