Join Archbishop Peter Smith on the Catholic Association Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Lourdes Theme for 2018
"Do whatever He tells you"

Dear Fellow Pilgrims,
I invite you to come on the Catholic Association Pilgrimage to Lourdes 2018. This year marks the 160th, Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette, and the pastoral theme for 2018 is ‘Do whatever he tells you’, words which are found in the Gospel of John,
when Mary speaks to those looking after the wedding in Cana, soon after she has discovered that ‘they have no wine’. Although two thousand years old, these words are also spoken directly to each one of us who are disciples of Jesus. Mary, the first and preeminent
disciple, asks us to listen to her Son – the caring mother who knows what is good for those entrusted to her care.

I often invite people to start every day with a simple threefold prayer: “Lord, open my ears that I may hear; open my eyes that I may see; open my heart and rekindle within it the fire of your love.” We need to be open to listen to the voice of God so that we can hear what he is asking us to do. In a busy world, times of quiet are the key to being open to God speaking deep in our hearts. Like Bernadette, Mary draws us aside from our normal, daily routine, so that we may come closer to God.

When we accept an invitation to join a pilgrimage, we travel together as disciples of Christ to ask for the intercession of Our Blessed Lady for our needs and those of our fellow pilgrims, particularly the sick. Whilst Lourdes itself is a bustling town we can find pools of quiet
where we can hear the Word of God speaking - at the Grotto, at the Baths, and in the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. If we, like Mary and Bernadette, are willing to pause and listen, then we can be transformed by Jesus, the Word of God, and return home refreshed,
at peace and with our faith strengthened.

+ Peter
Archbishop of Southwark.
