After years of restoration following the devastating 2019 fire, the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris reopened its doors to the public at the end of 2024.
Notre-Dame Cathedral houses several sacred relics, most notably from the Passion of Christ, which are kept in the cathedral’s treasury. These include:
1. The Crown of Thorns
This relic is believed to be the actual crown placed on Jesus' head during his crucifixion. Acquired by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) in the 13th century, it has been carefully preserved in a crystal tube.
2. A Fragment of the True Cross
A piece of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, brought to France during the medieval period.
3. A Holy Nail
The Holy Nail is believed to be one of the nails used in the crucifixion, this relic has been kept as part of the cathedral’s collection for centuries.
The relics were safely removed before the fire in 2019 and were stored in the Louvre Museum for protection. Upon the cathedral’s reopening they have been returned to the Notre-Dame.
Please note, it may not be possible to see these relics
